When compiling the kernel, just about the only option necessary for getting nvidia drivers to work is: loadable module support.

You'd be very hard pressed to get a fully working desktop system without this in your kernel, so its always assumed you've got it.

For nVidia driver module HOW-TO their own README is indispensible.
