There should be no audio ever coming from a DVI output ... DVI is video only
That when using a DVI->HDMI adapter it creates a problem with audio is an issue I've noticed with my 9400GT..
This didn't happen with my 8600GT...

This sounds more like a hardware related issue ; somehow the DVI output (which is video only) gets screwed with a DVI->HDMI adapter
