Default Easiest/best linux distro for an aging laptop

A friend of mine wants to delve in Linux for his aging laptop for sh:ts and giggles....I dun think he know what he is getting himself in for...or does he?

Is there a distro which is pretty much easy to install / configure etc for a laptop? Or can anyone give me a recommendation for a distro?

I haven't personally delved into Linux since red hat 5? or something like that...my friend has never tried linux full stop
