Default GTX260 + Jaunty, X-Server Not Functioning

I'm running Ubuntu Jaunty 2.6.28.11 on AMD64. Just upgraded from an 8800GTS (which worked perfectly) to a 260GTX. Monitor wise I'm running 32" 1920x1080 and 22" 1600x1050 off the one card.

I've installed the latest stable driver (180.51) using the NVIDIA .pkg.run script and am not experiencing any joy! X will start with default linux driver, displaying on one monitor only. I then run nvidia-xconfig to enable the NVIDIA driver and restart. All good so far it seems. On restart, the x server refuses to start properly. The "kubuntu" loading screen will display, but when it should move to the login screen, it flickers a few times and drops me out to tty2 terminal login.

Deleting xorg.conf and restarting kdm works, but once again, no NVIDIA driver being utilised! Looking at the kdm log, it seems that I have an issue with the NVIDIA kernel module being version 180.44 still:

kdm.log excerpt:
Code:
xorg-server 2:1.6.0-0ubuntu14 (buildd@crested.buildd)

I've checked and followed instructions to no avail! Can anyone help? How do I install the right kernel module!

nvidia-installer.log is attached. I also note I have the following warnings as part of it:

Code:

installation path, 'X: warning; process set to priority -2 instead of
         requested priority 0
         /usr/lib', reported by `/usr/bin/X -showDefaultLibPath` does not
exist. Please check your X.Org installation.

I'm still in linux-training. Keen to understand the fix so if anyone can help, I'd be most grateful!
