In a nutshell you have to undo everything and start fresh. "Purge" all the nvidia modules / envyng / etc that you installed with Synaptic. Install the ubuntu 'build-essential' package , if it isn't. Download nvidia-xconfig , install it (hint: http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree8...fig-1.0.tar.gz). Remove any binary drivers you installed with the 'sudo nvidia-installer --uninstall'.There are probably old drivers and messy links still in /usr/lib judging by /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 -> libGL.so.173.14.16. Choose 1 binary driver to install (180.51). Also make sure X(/etc/X11/xorg.conf) is set to load the 'nvidia' driver not 'nv' on startup.
