Look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log for any errors. Sounds like a X config error somewhere. You could try adding - Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" - to the SCREEN(screen 0) section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Thanks for this idea, but it doesn't make a difference
. Also, I don't see any errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
