While an interesting perspective you seem to forget one of the main purposes of *nix options, choice.

If it were only an X driver, the nvidia driver shouldn't be interfering with the framebuffer, but its not just an X driver; it effects the hardware otherwise and shouldn't apparently. "Just" using X isn't a reasonble option.

I have been unsuccesful in using high resolution framebuffer for my console entirely. :\
