As I'd written I changed the secondary display res to 1280x1024 after I had verified that this what my Windows partition is running it under.
And I don't see why I have to accept any less than what my Windoze partition can do under Linux.
I put these changes into xorg.conf:
Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI", "1"
Option "ModeValidation", "NoDFPNativeResolutionCheck"
I'll report back after my next system reboot if it was successfull.
