Up until now, I thought I could not use a ppa (from Launchpad) for driver updates, as I had to apply a patch to the driver.

on Ubuntu Forums, some people explained how to install the driver from ppa and apply the patch automatically using dkms. This means:
a) if a new kernel is installed, the driver is installed automatically on the new kernel.
b) if a new driver is released, you can execute the script (available in the thread) and restart, and after that the new driver is also patched.
I think this is very convenient, so I thought I share it with you.
