Default Stupid Upgrade Question

I know this has been asked a thousand times so I apologize.

Can I buy the $30 student 7 upgrade to 64 bit and install it if I'm currently running XP 32 bit(well, I have the Win7 RC installed so to speak)?

Because I plan on upgrading my computer soon. Or do I have to go out and buy the expensive version?
