I'm looking at the same issue. I've been asked to build a computer for an ex-girlfriend's father...
I considered a 295 / 285 / 275, but it seems that the nvidia market for high end cards has dried up... only 1 295 in stock on newegg and its a watercooled version, 285s are $380+ and 275's are averaging about $280...
I'm thinking the 5850 is going to be exactly at the price point / performance I want for him. $309 for the BFG version currently and its considerably faster than equivalently priced nvidia solutions... which saddens me greatly because I am by and large an nvidia fan, but the ATI card is just too well priced for the performance at the moment to pass-up.
I'd suggest the 5850 hands down... even if you're playing games with physx... the graphics horsepower would by far outweigh the benefit of physx.
