Cause most everyone doesn't have enough RAM to go without one.
Hence why the pagefile is "necessary". Without it, the cost of the computers would be considerably higher and as a result *far* fewer people would own a computer.
I just prefer not having one. Less wear and tear on my hard drive, and over all smoother system performance. Only downside is that it costs $$$.
