Yea I have done it. Use a HDMI to DVI converter (female HDMI to male DVI) and use a regular AV cable for the audio (red and white RCA to minijack). When you setup the display on the PS3, make sure to set the audio output settings (usually at the end of the display settings it asks you if you want to) and you're all set.
He should be aware that sometimes the adapter doesn't work, like on older lcd's and tv's 2004 and earlier (depends on manufacturer).
