It is hot, that is true and there is no denying it. But it isn't that much more than the 4870x2 and others.
I had the HD 4870x2 and never had any over heating problem. ATI had the starting fan speed for gaming set way too low. I set my fan speed in the profile at 45% and the problem was solved. I doubt there is going to be same easy solution for GTX 480.

Anyway I think we should be more comparing the temperatures on current generation cards because those are the only upgrade options.
