The high-pitched noises are still present on my W510 with the "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1" method and 195.36.24, though the buzz might have gotten a bit softer.
Ubuntu Lucid amd64 / kernel 2.6.33.2
Still using the switch to VT / change brightness / switch to X workaround...
