Default 256.29 Can't force second screen with ConnectedMonitor

We are using an Alienware m17x with 2x GeForce GTX 280m. We have been experiencing the Powermizer issues (mentoned elsewhere) with previous drivers, so I am trialling the new beta drivers.

Under the previous drivers (right back to 185) we could force the nvidia driver to load one X screen per GPU, even when an external monitor wasn't connected, using the "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP" option, eg

Section "Screen"
  Identifier "Screen1"
  Device "Device1"
  Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP"
Under the 256.29 driver this has stopped working. In the Xorg.0.log file I get:

(WW) <date> NVIDIA(GPU-1): Invalid ConnectedMonitor request, request was for 'DFP-0', but
(WW) <date> NVIDIA(GPU-1): the valid display devices are ''.
We really need to have both screens loaded. We are using the old Cg API (later CUDA won't run on this hardware) and we need to be able to create one OpenGL context per screen so that we can allocate work to each GPU.

Has this functionality been removed? If so, please advise how we can force the loading of the device driver for a GPU without an attached monitor. I've tried using "IgnoreEDID" and "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "DFP" with no luck.

Bug report log attached.
