The average frames per second were provided by Fraps. The benchmark actually provides a benchmark score, which breaks down as follows:

Quote:
[8000 and over] Extremely High Performance - Capable of running the game on the highest settings.

[5500–7999] Very High Performance - Should perform exceptionally well, even at higher resolutions.

[4500-5499] High Performance - Should perform well, even at higher resolutions.

[3000-4499] Fairly High Performance - Capable of running the game on default settings. Consider switching to a higher resolution depending on performance.

[2500-2999] Standard Performance - Capable of running the game on default settings.

[2000-2499] Slightly Low Performance - Capable of running the game, but may experience some slowdown. Adjust settings to improve performance.

[1500-1999] Low Performance - Capable of running the game, but will experience considerable slowdown. Adjusting settings is unlikely to improve performance.

[Under 1500] Insufficient Performance - Does not meet specifications for running the game.
At 1280x720, the Radeon HD 5870 benchmark score was 5706 and at 1920x1080 the score was 4828.

Dark Messiah

An underrated game that uses Valve's Source Engine. On GameRankings, Dark Messiah received a score of 75% based on 50 reviews.

Here's the playback we have been using to benchmark Dark Messiah.

Today's powerful GPUs can easily handle Dark Messiah with all settings maxed. Not so a few generations ago...
  • With 4x AA enabled at 2560x1600, the Radeon HD 5870 averaged 104 fps and a minimum of 52 fps.

OVERCLOCKING

Nothing to brag about here. Percent increases are less than the 10% I've come to expect.

Radeon HD 5870 - from 850MHz/1200MHz to 925MHz/1275MHz

  • Dirt 2 - 2560x1600 with 4x AA = 51/41 to 53/43 fps
  • Just Cause 2 - 1680x1050 with 4x AA = 74/50 to 79/54 fps
