Well at least something does actually do ALSA:hdmi. This is the first positive confirmation I have seen. Elsewhere I see bland statements to the effect "Linux does not do audio over HDMI" .. all in, all done.

Sorry, my mistake.

Just as a matter of interest, if you fire up something like speaker-test or aplay, can you demand all 8 channels of audio? And if you do so do you get sound from all 8 attached speakers? With spdif you can only demand 2.
