You don't carry a camelbak or anything like that for water? I know my cousin's bag would easily have enough room in the top of it for any phone.
Actually, if you rode a lot you should probably have a bike pump, tube, some tools etc... All of that stuff would take up more room then a phone as well.
Also for riding if you got a hard case for the phone, you could mount it right in the middle of the handle bars. Then you could use it for a GPS or whatever else.
