What I am trying to get at here is that 3d sound in games is complex. The X-fi is more then just an upgrade for your on boards DAC, it actually has a dsp to offload the 3d sound modeling from the cpu. This can be a pretty heafty process in todays games. If you are simply telling windows to use your video card as a sound source then I fear all the sound modeling is being done on the cpu thus cutting into your performance.
Which I'm curious about as well.
However, they're saying it's only using about 2% of their CPU, which isn't worth worrying about IMO.
And considering that, with my stock i7 920 I've yet to see it consistantly above 15% usage, I'm not worried about over taxing this proc anytime soon.
If the sound quality is that much more impressive that on-board with DD encoding, then once I get my new receiver and speakers I'll have to consider doing this. I'm a sucker for killer sound.
