I'd go with 64 bit already. There's little reason not to and a few reasons to do. I've put linux x86_64 on a pentium4 with 2GB RAM before and didn't see much of a problem there. I didn't test it for a long time, but I never heard complaints from the person using it. Unless windows sucks that much, I doubt it will be a difference; it has the similar 32 compatibility subsystem. The major negative there is needing a copy of libraries for 32 bit, but it's really not that big of a deal.
