I suppose one of the reasons NVIDIA doesn't support Optimus under Linux is that X.org server architecture doesn't quite fit this technology requirements. As I understand Optimus it requires plugging in and unplugging video output drivers on-the-fly and routing the output of NVIDIA GPU via the same circuit which the embedded GPU uses.
Another problem is that NVIDIA drivers completely replace X.org server GL/GLX subsystem, while e.g. Intel drivers require classic MESA GL. I don't think reconciling these two approaches/subsytems is a simple task from any perspective.
