In Linux, yes. You can't set X to 32-bit depth (it will set itself to 32 bpp sometimes, though; however, it doesn't matter since visually, there's no difference), because that doesn't actually exist. If it did, you wouldn't see any difference between it and 24-bit depth anyway (we can hardly distinguish 16 million colors IIRC, which is how many there are in a 24-bit depth mode -- we don't need 4 billion).
