Sticking with 512MB VRAM will keep them well behind the next gen from MS and Sony, 1GB would allow them to at least look like they are in the same generation. RV770 should be enough, but when the next gen consoles are all using high res textures and Wii2 is stuck with current gen console textures the difference in graphics will be immediately noticeable to everyone.
