I agree with your observation, that out of the box, the phone is really hard to work with, with regards to how deep you have togo in the menu system.
I've done the rooting thing before and sometimes I just feel like it's more trouble than it's worth. I'm interested in seeing what they have in store for iOS 5. iOS seems to be getting long in the tooth imo.
