Default Problem with Linux networking

Dear all,
I have a toshiba laptop which has installed Fedora 7 linux software. I cannot update Fedora due to various reasons (one of which is that I have installed a program I could not reinstall to another version of Fedora).
My laptop connection (wired) takes a long time to transmit messages. I would like to ask you if you think that interfering with the kernel (mine is quite old 2.6.21) is a good idea ? Like chanding a boot parameter (as pcie_aspm=off).
Would this affect the functioning of the laptop ?
I would be very grateful for your advice.
I look forward to hearing from you,
