I've been having what I believe is the same problem.
GTX460, Ubuntu 11.04 Kernel 2.6.38-10 (64-bit), Sandybridge chipset. Random crashes (completely random as far as I can tell) were occurring on average every 3-6 hours, this was a hard crash requiring a hard reset, and when playing audio, this resulted in looping, sometimes distorted.
A couple of days ago I removed the nvidia drivers, and reverted to the nouveau drivers. Since, I have had no problems for about 48 hours runtime!
I have just upgraded my kernel to 3.0.0, and intend on testing this out, however there is currently a problem with nvidia binaries on 3.0.0. Apparently the latest nvidia drivers from xorg-edgers solves this. Will report back with results.
I have a similar setup (Sandybridge, GTX 460 M, core I-7) running stock Ubuntu 11.04. and the Nvidia driver version (280.13). Causes kernel crash - after running about 4/5 minutes. nvidia-bug-report attached.
