IMHO, best for headphones is a X-Fi based card (CMSS > Dolby Headphone for games), an amp if the card doesn't have one built in and a decent set of bass heavy cans with a clip on mic. Gaming headsets are ok, but are often way overpriced for the sound you are getting. :
