As I primarily use mplayer, I will comment on your use of that.

It isn't sufficient to specify the video output driver (-vo vdpau), you need to specify the codec as well (-vc ffh264vdpau) in this case.

You can add the follwing to your ~/.mplayer/config:

vo=vdpau,
vc=ffh264vdpau,ffmpeg12vdpau,ffvc1vdpau,ffwmv3vdpau,
This will force mplayer to always attempt to use VDPAU output and codecs before trying any other. The trailing comma tells mplayer to try detecting other codecs, if the ones you specified doesn't work with that particular file.
