Well the OG Droid launched with Eclair 2.0. So, it naturally had issues running Froyo (2.2), not to mention that phone hardware has substantially improved over the past 2 years. I really like Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich is even better.
I suggest you tryout a Samsung Galaxy Nexus if you get a chance. I think you'd be quite impressed with it.
