That has never happened in the past. It never stopped one in the past from totally demolishing the other. Both companies have always released what they have at the time.
I'm not saying that NVIDIA has GK110 completed and ready and just waiting to push the release button when AMD releases their refresh. Maybe they are still having yield issues with the big chip and decided to counter now with a smaller one rather than having a Fermi redux and another half year or greater lag behind the competition. It's just that many of the reviews are already discussing the larger chip, and rumors point to a release later this year. Just makes the 680 a tough sell for me at this time at its price point.
