I just upgraded to 295-33 (i think i was running 295-20) and the problem is solved. I was having the issue with ubuntu 11.10 and xbmc. The ppa for nvidia has the updated drivers, so I could just "aptitude update;aptitude safe-upgrade" to update the drivers. Please note a reboot is necessary to load the new nvidia modules.
