Short-term, the Bulldozer path is certainly a failure, but long-term I think it actually makes good business sense. Incremental improvements should be easier to make, development costs should decrease, executing on time should be easier. The primary fail was that they were not able match Phenom II's IPC, and they still have memory subsystem problems.
The reality was AMD had not been competing with Intel in absolute performance for some time. I think they realized this and also realized that it was a huge financial drain to try to do things the same way as Intel. AMD's cpu cores will get better, and several years from now they may be competing with Intel again. I just wonder how large the x86 market will be by then.
