I tried ATI as well, with mixed results. Their drivers are also quite crashy as well when used for 3D or GPGPU applications.
One thing I can say for sure is find an ATI driver you like and stick with it, as I encountered many issues with upgrading ATI drivers such as black screens and freezes.
One very good thing about the ATI linux driver is the TearFree setting in the Catalyst Control Center. Worked like a charm every time.
ATI hardware video decode is quite a bit buggier than VDPAU, and is a bit of a pain to setup. They also take a bit longer to support new X updates.
