This. It's how Win7 was designed to be used. Common programs on the task bar, others you just press the windows key/start button wherever you are and click on one of the common options or begin typing. If you use Win 8 in the same way it's not that bad, just that most people don't know that you can press the windows key, so I think scrapping the button all together is not a great idea.
