If you can boot into x with old configuration go to /etc/X11 directory
open XF86Config-4 with kwrite or gedit then change

Driver "nv"
(or Driver "vesa")

with

Driver "nvidia"

In the Module section, make sure you have:

Load "glx"

You should also remove the following lines:

Load "dri"
Load "GLcore"

restart x (ctrl+alt+backspace) and if you see nvidia logo you're fine

If you can't boot in x mode then type
cd /etc/X11
vi XF86Config-4
do the same as above
use arrow keys to navigate
"i" button to insert text
escape
:w to save
:q to quit
init 5

good luck
