Unhappy AGP won't enable on Medion 40566 laptop

I'm experiencing an odd issue with a GeForce Go 5200 (built into my laptop).
Essentially AGP won't enable (or possibly report being enabled) when using the nvidia kernel drivers. I've tried with NvAGP 0 thru 3 and only 0 works. All others result in a black screen (but the machine still traps CRTL-ALT-DEL and reboots properly.) The Xfree86.0.log indicates that AGP is disabled and then truncates (hung, I guess.) glxgears will indicate either 5fps or 2000+ depending on it's mood, phase of the moon, etc. BIOS settings in this machine are bloody useless -- does anyone know how to unhide them? It's a standard PHOENIX BIOS but half the usual settings are missing! I've tried both 4496 & 5328 driver versions.

I've included as much info as I can think of that relates and will try kernel 2.6 tonight to see if it makes any difference.

Regards

- Todd.
