Here are some things I can think about:
Make sure you're at the right init level (with telinit), for some reason, the first time I tried to install the drivers, this one didn't wrk right (the consoles would somehow overlap: one command would appear normally, then a minute after, it would be back to the installer window, then the command line would appear, etc...);
When you compile, try exporting SYSSRC=/usr/src/linux-2.4.22-26mdkenterprise/ instead of /usr/src/linux (it might be linking to an older source)

I didn't try the 4496 drivers, since I just installed mdk a few weeks ago, so I just went for the most recent drivers.
