The command is "glxgears" - you type it into an xterm. It opens an
opengl window of a standard size with 3 rotating gears and prints out
framerate information to the xterm.

Screensavers occupy the whole screen and so would be substantially
slower than the standard size glxgears window. Depending on the actual
screensaver it may or may not use 3D acceleration.
