LCDs are built to have a "native" resolution, whereby all text and graphics appear crisp and sharp. Any resolution above or below that will be interpolated, thus causing blurry and/or corrupted graphics. It's not that big a deal in games, but for desktop work you want to keep the display at the native resolution. CRT monitors do not suffer from these issues.
