So far, I'm still getting the same results. I read through your thread and it appears to be the exact same issue I encountered. I've followed your instructions to the letter, but even rebuilding the GLX from src did not fix the problem for me. Same error as before, "(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize theNVdriver kernel module!".
Lo there
After two sleepless nights i thought i would be time to post in here aswell. At first I can say that I get the same error as Ron. In short form what i used /have done:

- Kernelupdate to 2.4.18-17.8.0
- Booting with 2.4.18-17.8.0 bigmem
- Installing SRPMS in Console (V.2960) (worked fine, no errors)
- Changing "nv" to "nvidia"
- Deleting the dri parts
- Rebooting with same kernel
- Starting X Server...

...and here comes the error log from X11:

OK, i checked the Nvidia-pdf file. There it says this error is most likely caused by a wrong installed kernel module. So I had a look at lsmod. Indeed no NV-modules. I tried an insmod NV* and a surprisingly error occured:

[root@thapole root]# insmod NV*
Using /lib/modules/2.4.18-17.8.0bigmem/kernel/drivers/video/NVdriver
/lib/modules/2.4.18-17.8.0bigmem/kernel/drivers/video/NVdriver: The module you are trying to load (/lib/modules/2.4.18-17.8.0bigmem/kernel/drivers/video/NVdriver) is compiled with a gcc
version 2 compiler, while the kernel you are running is compiled with
a gcc version 3 compiler. This is known to not work.
I know i compiled the kernel under the 2.4.18-17.8.0bigmem-kernel, so i have no clue why i get this...
Maybe you should check if u get the same Ron. If so we should search for someone willing to translate this last error

My System btw:
AMD Classic 750MHz
Asus K7V with VIA chipset
ELSA Synergy II - RIVA TNT 2
