If the box rebooted after a short time of 'nothing shown, black screen'.. its possible it is set to reboot on kernel panics (which is what the 4K stack issue will create). Pushing ctrl-alt-del would also trigger the reboot which he may not be aware of after a kernel panic. Its not too clear what order things transpired...
IF you already recompiled the kernel to deal with the issues...
1) you should remove /etc/X11/XF86Config and use only /etc/X11/xorg.conf, this will simplify your life.
2) use system-config-display to generate a clean, new config
3) edit for nvidia's driver
4) start X or GDM or init 5... however you prefer to do it...
5) if you immediately get a blank screen, you may not have the 4K stack or reg parm issue dealt with quite correctly...
In any case, a more thorough description of what you have done so far will help us get you on the right track -- include info about your system, and attach the config used.. and /var/log/Xorg.0.log if possible.
