How do you get those privilages? Also, do you have to do it without X running, or could you edit it through X and restart to update the changes?
\you must first switch to root user..(su) and you should be able to change the file.....you may change this while running X and then reboot and you should be the NVIDIA logo before X and your desktop manager begin...
