There is more than one game where the X800 cards don't even bother to render the shadows. I guess those are as equally useless as full trilinear. I almost sure they are handling them in Painkiller though. Observe the differences between the X800XT/6800U at 1200x1600 with the X800XT using a lower level of AA, 2xAA vs. 4xAA for the 6800U.Again, 1200x1600 is where these these card show what they can do. Owning a 9800pro I know shadows have more often that not hit Ati cards hard. See below:
