Yeah I have to say these trees arent that impressive. You cant model the complexity of a plant's DNA and years of environmental effects, damage and mutation with simple "speedtree" equations. It will still take a highly skilled artist to capture the look of a real tree for some years to come.
It's like saying you can create the most realistic people models (like dawn or dalu) with a two row piece of code.
The best trees I've seen are in BF1942, they're also soft-alpha instead of this 2-bit alpha that looks so rough and crude (but is fast). BFV trees arent that hot but I'd say almost better than in this demo.
