Could you post the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log? (or whatever you use if different)

1) Does your xorg.conf have all the nvidia stuff?
2) If your X logfile has an error message about 'no screens detected' or something similar, it's probably the same error a LOT of people get here...but no one ever posts what it actually is. Either because of the 2.6.x kernels, or because of udev (or something else, but those are the 2 best-looking candidates), the nvidia.ko module never gets loaded on system start, so startx will fail. If you're in runlevel 3, startx will just crash back to the terminal, but in graphical boots it just hangs with a black screen. I'm not really sure on whose end this is an error, but if you just add a line to your initscripts to specifically load the nvidia module, it should work (assuming this is the problem).
