Upgrading to 4.2 on debian doesn't have to be good. (I upgraded but had my reasons for it.) 4.1 should work fine. For debian will still take some time before official 4.2 packages show up. They will be released when xfree86 4.2 works fine on all 11 (or were it 12 already) officially supported architectures (i386, ppp, sparc, arm, alpha ...) . (most aren't even tested by the xfree86 developers)

There are unofficial 4.2 debs for some of the architectures but those aren't that reliable yet. Check here if you want them:
