so the originator of this Thread was right. The driver does not probe right for the modes and thats where everything is screwed up. As soon as you give everything manual it seems to work for everyone. In my last post I included the right values for a Toshiba Satellite 3000-214 which should work just fine on a 3000-514 too.
One of the main faults on laptops seem to be the vrefresh rate, which should not be more than 60 on a LCD but is a lot higher for CRTs. ( so it is to high in default xorg.conf ).

I read about a lot of Dell users here. these should try:

sudo modprobe nvidia NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=1
as stated in the README in Appendix ?: How to configure a laptop.

I hope we get a lot more people out of that misery.

By the way, glxgears gives me 852 fps now
