Re: Dual OPTERON SLI BENCHMARKS
I can overclock the Opterons without consequences to about 2.4ghz, up from 2.2 stock. The HT will go past the 222mhz point, but I see errata in certain apps beyond 222mhz HT. Remember that this is a software overclock (Win)- it would be nice to do this in the BIOS instead. On the other hand - drivers are still being developed and a good driver will be a greater quality/speed solution than any overclock.
I have downloaded and installed the 9.3 Linux load on my quadro system and I seem to have 3d acceleration and most of the bells and whistles - HOWEVER I do not have any SLI features.
The Suse distribution seems to handle the Nvidia card well. I hate to admit ignorance, but I have not worked with the G or RedHat in a couple of years. In addition, I did go through several painful hoops to get the SATA raid to perform as I would expect.
Some advice on Linux, dual opterons, and AMD64:
Make use of this forum at http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-amd64
-in there you will see many people, problems, solutions etc. I highly recomend it.
I will answer the third question as accuratly as I can while still remaining vague:
No, I did not spend as much on the box as you might expect - most of it was done through relationships and leveraged positions. It wasn't free either. But I really am enthusiastic when it comes to this stuff.
On a side note:
On the official release MS Win Enterprise Server 2003 64 bit OS
Doom III / ROE with the new 76.71 -64 bit driver
1600x1200 Ultra settings 8x AA and all eye candy
... now if John could make the Doom III engine multithreaded ...shudder
Anyone know of any current multi-threaded games? (Yes-I already did the patch 1.17 Quake 3) I have found several 64-bit games, but my quest is for multi-threaded 64-bit games.
