If any of your files have been edited, that will cause this problem. I sometimes edit the startup script in the game directory with:
xgamma -gamma X.X
if the game doesn't have any option to change brightness in the game or add other options that can't be changed in the game.
If in doubt, delete the whole game directory, reinstall and apply the patch. The game files are kept in your home directory so you won't loose them.
